SINULOG: A Celebration of Faith, Culture, and Heritage
Sinulog is the most celebrated festival in Cebu and one of the grandest cultural and religious events in the Philippines. Its roots trace back to 1521, when the image of the Santo Niño (the Child Jesus) was given by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan to Queen Juana of Cebu upon her baptism into Christianity. This
historic event marked the beginning of Christianity in the Philippines.
The word Sinulog comes from the Cebuano word sulog, meaning "like the current of the river." The festival's iconic two-steps-forward, one-step-back dance symbolizes the flowing movement of the river and honors the journey of the Cebuanos—from their indigenous traditions to their enduring Christian faith.
For generations, Sinulog has become more than a festival. It is a vibrant expression of devotion, thanksgiving, and hope. Every beat of the drum, every colorful costume, and every graceful dance reflects the unwavering faith, resilience, joy, and rich cultural heritage of the Cebuano people.
